HemothoraxĪ hemothorax is when there is an accumulation of blood in the pleural cavity. Pleural effusionĪ pleural effusion is when there is an accumulation of fluid in that pleural cavity. PneumothoraxĪ pneumothorax is when there is an accumulation of air in the pleural cavity. ![]() If for some reason there were an accumulation of air, blood, or fluid in the pleural cavity - between the two layers of the pleura - that would increase tension in the pleural cavity, putting pressure on the lungs.
